PM Anwar Ibrahim Contributes RM100,000 to Support Alam Shah Wind Orchestra’s Journey to World Music Contest 2026
PETALING JAYA — Anwar Ibrahim has extended financial support of RM100,000 to Sekolah Sultan Alam Shah (SAS) to assist the Alam Shah Wind Orchestra (ASWO) in preparing for their upcoming participation in the prestigious World Music Contest 2026 in Kerkrade, the Netherlands.
The Prime Minister made the announcement following a visit to the school in Putrajaya, where he took the opportunity to inspect the institution’s facilities and engage directly with members of the orchestra. The visit highlighted the government’s recognition of the role of arts and culture in shaping well-rounded individuals and representing the nation on the global stage.
Young Musicians Set to Represent Malaysia
The ASWO ensemble comprises 46 students from Forms One to Four, all of whom have been selected to represent Malaysia at the international competition scheduled to take place on July 30. Their participation marks a significant milestone for the school and underscores the growing prominence of Malaysian youth in global performing arts arenas.
During his interaction with the students, Anwar expressed admiration for their dedication and courage in pursuing excellence beyond national borders. He emphasised that such achievements reflect not only individual talent but also the broader strength of the country’s education system in nurturing confident and capable young leaders.
“The willingness of these young individuals to step onto the international stage is a reflection of our nation’s true potential,” he said, noting that success should not be measured solely by economic or physical development, but also by the ability to cultivate character, confidence, and cultural identity.
Financial Support to Boost Preparations
The RM100,000 contribution is intended to support the orchestra’s logistical and preparatory needs as they gear up for the competition in Europe. International events of this scale require extensive planning, including travel arrangements, accommodation, equipment transport, and intensive rehearsals.
Anwar expressed hope that the financial assistance would ease the burden on the students and their families, allowing them to focus fully on their performance. He added that such support is crucial in ensuring that talented youth are given equal opportunities to excel regardless of financial constraints.
Arts as a Pillar of National Development
The Prime Minister’s gesture also highlights the increasing emphasis on arts and cultural development as part of Malaysia’s broader national agenda. While academic achievement often takes centre stage, initiatives like this demonstrate the importance of balancing intellectual growth with creative expression.
He noted that participation in international competitions provides valuable exposure, helping students develop discipline, teamwork, and global awareness. These experiences, he said, contribute to shaping individuals who are not only skilled but also resilient and culturally enriched.
Encouragement for Global Success
In a message shared on his social media platform, Anwar conveyed his best wishes to the orchestra, urging them to perform with confidence and pride. He encouraged the students to showcase their musical excellence while carrying the Malaysian identity onto the international stage.
“I wish them success as they bring their talent to Europe. May their performance resonate with world-class quality and reflect the spirit and artistry of Malaysia,” he said.
The participation of ASWO in the World Music Contest 2026 is expected to further strengthen Malaysia’s presence in the global music community, while inspiring more young talents to pursue excellence in the arts.
