Wholesale and retail trade rose 6.6 percent to RM144.9 bln in April – Statistics

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s wholesale and retail trade recorded a sales value of RM144.9 billion, up 6.6 percent year-on-year in April 2024, said the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DoSM).
Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Mohd Uzir Mahidin, in a statement, said the increase was driven by a 5.5 percent, or RM3.3 billion, increase in the retail trade subsector to RM63.8 billion.

“Wholesale trade also increased by recording 4.8 percent, or RM2.9 billion, to RM63.8 billion, followed by motor vehicles with an increase of 18.1 percent, or RM2.6 billion, to RM17.3 billion,” he said.

For a monthly comparison, wholesale and retail trade fell -0.6 percent from the previous month due to a decline recorded in motor vehicles and wholesale trade, which declined -8.2 percent and -0.4 percent, respectively.

On the subsector’s performance, he said the 5.5 percent year-on-year growth (in April, retail trade was contributed by non-specialty store sales, which increased 5.2 percent, or RM1.2 billion, to RM24.7 billion.

“For a month-to-month comparison, the sales of this subsector increased by 1.5 percent,” said Mohd Uzir.

He also said the 4.8 percent year-on-year increase for the wholesale trade sub-sector was supported by other specializations; wholesale sales jumped RM1.0 billion, or 4.2 percent, to RM23.9 billion.

On the other hand, for a monthly comparison, wholesale trade fell 0.4 percent.

“Year-on-year growth of 18.1 percent for the motor vehicle subsector in April was driven by motor vehicle sales up 26.5 percent, or RM1.8 billion, to RM8.6 billion.

“This is followed by the sale of motor vehicle spare parts and accessories (11.8 percent) and the maintenance and repair of motor vehicles (13.1 percent),” he said.

He said for a monthly comparison, the subsector contracted -8.2 percent due to the sale of motor vehicles (-13.4 percent) and the sale, maintenance, and repair of motorcycles (-21.2 percent).

In terms of volume index, wholesale and retail trade in April recorded year-on-year growth of 4.5 percent, contributed by all subsectors, namely motor vehicles (17.1 percent), retail trade (3.5 percent), and wholesale trade (2.7 percent).

As for the seasonally adjusted volume index, it rose again to 5.5 percent month-on-month.
