Vietnam hopes that the UN and ASEAN together deal with the Myanmar issue closely and effectively

NEW YORK: Vietnam’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) Dang Hoang Giang, on June 5 held a meeting with the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy on Myanmar, Julie Bishop, during her working visit to New York.

Congratulating Bishop on his appointment as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Myanmar, Giang believed that with his extensive diplomatic experience and deep understanding of the region, Bishop is expected to successfully carry out this role, Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported.

Giang emphasized that the main priority now is to build trust, promote ceasefire and dialogue, and facilitate humanitarian aid activities.

He emphasized that ASEAN’s five-point consensus continues to be an important basis for efforts to find a peaceful and sustainable solution.

The Vietnamese diplomat hopes that the UN and especially the Bishop will coordinate closely and effectively with ASEAN and the ASEAN Chairman’s Special Envoy on Myanmar in accordance with the principles of respect for independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and non-interference in internal affairs, in line with the wishes and aspirations of the people of Myanmar.

The Bishop stressed that he will make every effort to contribute to bringing peace and stability to Myanmar. He emphasized that the UN supports ASEAN’s leading role in this process.

Appreciating Vietnam’s position in the UN and ASEAN, as well as its constructive approach to the Myanmar issue, the Bishop hopes that Vietnam will continue to promote its role and make a positive contribution to joint efforts towards achieving a comprehensive and long-term solution to the current crisis in Myanmar.
