Understand how media organizations can take full advantage of AI technology – Fahmi

PUTRAJAYA: Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil advised media organizations to make full use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology to help speed up the preparation of news reports.

He said that currently, many AI results, especially Generative AI (GenAI), can be broadcast in audio visual format.

“What I would like us to explore is that there may be something that can be used by AI and GenAI to help, for example, the Malaysian Government Call Center (MyGCC) to examine large amounts of data or so that certain works by an individual can be focused on several things.

“AI may be able to simplify, collect, and categorize data to help in that aspect,” he said when speaking at the Communications Ministry’s Monthly Assembly here today.

Also present were Deputy Minister of Communications Teo Nie Ching, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Communications Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, Bernama Chief Executive Officer Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, and Bernama Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj.

Fahmi, however, insisted that AI cannot replace the role of humans but can help reduce the daily workload.

“The more advanced AI is, especially GenAI,. I can’t help but think of the annoyance of editors, script writers, and illustrators; do they feel what their future will be like?” he said.

He also hoped that the progress of AI could be used for performances and events celebrating National Day on August 31 in Putrajaya and Malaysia Day on September 16 in Sabah.

“The Ministry of Communications, as the host that manages events in conjunction with National Day and Malaysia Day, would like to convey a clear message both implicitly and in writing.

“I hope agencies try to start thinking about what can be used with AI,” he said.
