UN Security Council approves resolution authorizing support for SADC mission in Democratic Republic of Congo
NEW YORK: The UN Security Council adopted a resolution Tuesday authorizing the UN Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) to provide operational and logistical support to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Mission in DR Congo.
The draft resolution, circulated by France and Sierra Leone, was voted on in the 15-member Security Council and unanimously passed.
Speaking before the vote, Sierra Leone’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Michael Imran Kanu, said the resolution “seeks to create a conducive environment for the implementation of ongoing regional peace efforts.”
He emphasized that the resolution “stresses the importance of protection of civilians, of ensuring coherent coordination, complementarity and efficient articulation of efforts between MONUSCO, SADC and SAMIDRC.”
