UN Chief Pays Tribute to 136 Staff Killed in Gaza

NEW YORK: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres paid tribute to his staff who lost their lives in the Gaza conflict, as reported by the German News Agency (dpa).

“A total of 136 of our colleagues in Gaza have been killed in 75 days – something we have never seen in the history of the UN,” Guterres stated on the X platform on Saturday. “Most of our staff have been forced out of their residences. I salute them and the thousands of aid workers risking their lives to support the civilians in Gaza,” he added.

In another note, Guterres once again criticized Israel’s actions in the conflict. “Israel’s actions in conducting attacks create significant obstacles to the humanitarian aid distribution mission in Gaza,” he said.

To effectively bring humanitarian aid to Gaza, he stated that his staff must work in a safe environment. After several delays, the UN Security Council approved a resolution on Friday urging an increase in humanitarian aid for two million civilians in the Gaza Strip.

However, the UN body adopted the resolution without demanding an immediate ceasefire, as Guterres had hoped for.
