The police confirmed that the man who attacked the Ulu Tiram Police Station early this morning was a member of the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) group.

According to the Inspector General of Police, Tan Sri Razarudin Husain, the 34-year-old suspect had indeed prepared to carry out the attack that killed two police officers.

“The police raided the suspect’s house and arrested five of his family members aged between 15 and 62, believed to be members of a Jemaah Islamiyah splinter group.

“The suspect’s father was a Jemaah Islamiyah member in Ulu Tiram, and the suspect’s residence also contained several pieces of information related to JI,” he said at a press conference at the scene today.

Razarudin added that two students, aged 21 and 22, who had come to the police station before the incident, supposedly to file a report about a molestation case, were also detained.

“The molestation case occurred two years ago, and they came to the station at 2 AM, which seemed illogical, so we arrested both of them,” he said.

He added that the police found that the suspect had made preparations before carrying out the attack at the police station.

“The bag used as a shield was filled with items for combatting the police; possibly he came to acquire firearms.

“I have directed the Special Branch to identify and investigate all JI members in Johor.

“We have more than 20 JI members currently under investigation,” he stated.

Razarudin also mentioned that they would increase security measures at police stations around the state.

“Security at the stations will be enhanced, and we will inform the Palace and the Chief Minister as it is our responsibility.

“We will increase patrols at the stations, and if there is inadequate lighting at any station, it will be improved,” he said.
