Ulu Tiram attack: 5 members of the suspect’s family remain detained under Sosma
KUALA LUMPUR: Five family members of suspects in the Ulu Tiram Police Station attack case, Johor remain detained under the Security Offenses (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma).
Home Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the police can use the law to conduct an investigation into the incident.
“At the moment they remain as announced by the Inspector General of Police (Tan Sri Razarudin Husain) i.e. detained under Sosma.
“The law allows us to use and (for) the purpose of the (investigation) process that takes place to enable the investigation to take place.
“They also have the option to bring a lawyer because Sosma allows (the suspect) to do so,” he said in a press conference here on Friday.
He had previously attended the Field and Posthumous Ceremony of the Application of Ranks and the Application of Pure Values Program of the Minister of Home Affairs together with the PDRM at the Malaysian Police Training Center (PULAPOL), here.
On May 24, Razarudin said all the suspects aged 19 to 62 were re-arrested under Sosma after their remand period ended.
Sosma allows the detention of any suspect for 28 days without trial.
In the attack at 2.45am on May 17, Constable Ahmad Azza Fahmi Azhar, 22, and Constable Muhamad Syafiq Ahmad Said, 24, died after being attacked by a masked man armed with a machete.
Meanwhile, Corporal Mohd Hasif Roslan was injured by gunfire in his left shoulder and hip and is in a stable condition and is still being treated at Sultan Ismail Hospital (HSI).
The attacker was shot dead in the incident.
