The Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat called KSU every ministry to look at outdated acts
IPOH: The Speaker of the House of Representatives Tan Sri Johari Abdul has recently summoned the Chief Secretary (KSU) and legal advisors of each ministry to review existing acts that may not be suitable at this time.
He said the move is necessary to discuss laws that are no longer relevant or suitable for the digital era and need to be improved to keep up with the times.
“I have already requested that these KSUs and we will have at least two to three meetings a year. This is the first time the Speaker has called all the KSUs, Alhamdulillah the response has been quite good.
“I remember we will have a second meeting probably during this Budget (2025), it will give space to the KSU to communicate directly with my office through the House Secretary,” he said at a press conference after a working visit to the Perak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) here. today.
Johari said he did not put a timeline for any proposal from the KSU because the effort is an ongoing process and those at the Parliamentary level will help in this matter.
He said this when asked if there was a study on the old act at the Parliament level.
Touching on today’s work visit, Johari said he learned about a number of things in Perak including assistance to state assembly members.
“For example, Perak has already started steps to help the assemblyman in terms of his service center, I was also an assemblyman in Kedah but to get the allocation of the service center I had to fight in the House,” he said.
“Secondly, in Perak there is also a select committee that is specific to specific issues such as the issue of flies. It seems like a joke but that is the reality that with the existence of this select committee, it is not only the Speaker’s initiative but also can involve all parties,” he said.
He said the existence of the special selection committee was able to solve the resulting problems more easily.
Also present were the Speaker of Perak State Assembly Datuk Mohammad Zahir Abdul Khalid and his deputy, Jenny Choy Tsi Jen.
This is Johari’s third working visit to DUN after Melaka and Negeri Sembilan.
Johari also said issues related to the Anti-Party Jumping Act may be the focus of the 2024 All-Malaysia Parliament and Legislative Assembly Speakers’ Conference that will take place this September.
“Yes, there may be that question even though it is not on the actual agenda but it does not prevent the Speaker from asking so that there is understanding.
“It must be remembered that each state has its own body of laws, so maybe what happens in Parliament is a guideline because in the end, states have their own rights. God willing, it may be in the discussion…,” he said. .
Johari said this when answering a question on whether the act would be discussed at the conference because previously there were parties who voiced issues related to the loopholes in the law.
