The Selangor government will open a Textile Museum in the near future
PATTANI: The Selangor State Government will open a Textile Museum in the near future as an effort to safeguard the state’s textile heritage.
Selangor Housing and Culture Exco, Borhan Aman Shah, said the museum will exhibit various types of traditional textiles from the state that are of high status, such as telepuk, kelingkan, songket and Selangor Batik.
“At the moment, we are still looking for a suitable location and it needs to be done as soon as possible because the allocation has been approved by the state government.
“The museum will later be equipped with a weaving house, in addition to providing various activities related to batik weaving,” he told reporters after visiting the Yaring and Barahom Barzaar Batik Factory here, in conjunction with the Selangor-Thailand 2024 Cultural Crossing program.
The Silang Budaya Program is an annual program that started last year, involving work visits to selected ASEAN member countries to introduce and promote Selangor art and culture at the international level.
This year, the program was held in Thailand, particularly in Songkhla, Pattani, and Narathiwat Provinces, to strengthen the relationship of cooperation between the two parties through the empowerment of culture, art, and heritage.
In the meantime, Borhan said, his party also plans to hold a competition related to Selangor Batik designs for all ages as an effort to introduce and promote Selangor Batik more widely.
He said that Selangor Batik comes with a nine-petalled cape flower motif as a symbol of the nine districts, thus becoming the identity of the state.
“We hope that this kind of organization will open up opportunities and space to further increase their interest in batik making, thus giving birth to batik makers from Selangor,” he said.
In fact, the Selangor State Malay Customs and Heritage Association (PADAT) has also been responsible for holding workshops and seminars for batik enthusiasts and entrepreneurs in the state.
“We want Selangor Batik to be the proud batik of the state,” he said while informing that his party is also in discussions with a local airline company to carry out the mission of promoting Selangor batik.
