The riots in the UK should be a lesson to Malaysia – Fahmi
PUTRAJAYA: The Communications Minister insisted that the worst riot in 13 years in the United Kingdom (UK), which is believed to be caused by the spread of anti-Islam fake news, should be used as a lesson so that similar incidents do not happen in Malaysia.
He said the incident made the country aware that the problem of spreading fake news cannot be dealt with carelessly.
“This gives us an awareness that we cannot take the problem of the spread of fake news carelessly and we have seen how, after the completion or end of the general election (PRU) in 2022, there is a fairly widespread spread in social media platforms that is quite extreme and 3R (king, religion and race).
“In Malaysia, at least we hold many discussions with social media platforms to ensure that they are also proactive and help to curb the spread of fake news, especially news related to the 3R issue,” he said.
He said this at a press conference after the Cabinet meeting here on Wednesday.
Fahmi explained that the riot sparked violence and Islamophobia following the stabbing incident in Southport, northern England, on July 29.
According to him, everything started because of the spread of false anti-Muslim information on social media.
