The government is considering ending the chicken egg subsidy after the supply recovers – Mat Sabu
PUTRAJAYA : The government will review the provision of chicken egg subsidies for grades A, B and C if the egg supply recovers and stabilizes.
The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, said that the end of the subsidy can be used for the development of other more urgent agro-food sectors.
” When we took an unpopular decision by ending the chicken subsidy, at that time many people criticized our efforts, saying that the price of chicken would soar.
“Alhamdulillah, after the subsidies ended, the price of chicken no longer soared and more importantly, the country was able to save RM100 million a month.
“So that’s why I think it’s time for the ministry to review the provision of chicken egg subsidies for grades A, B and C when the egg supply has recovered and stabilized,” he said.
He said this while addressing the ministry’s monthly gathering here on Wednesday.
Last year, the government allocated RM927 million for chicken egg subsidies.
