Teacher Investigated for Punishing Students to Stand in the Heat

AMPANG: Police are investigating a teacher accused of punishing several students by making them stand in a school field here on April 30.

Ampang Jaya District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Mohd Azam Ismail, said a report was filed earlier by the mother of one of the students involved.

“The 11-year-old victim complained to his mother when she picked him up from school around 1:20 PM that he was punished by the teacher for standing in the hot field for more than two hours.

“A medical examination later revealed that the victim suffered from heat exhaustion due to the incident,” he said in a statement on Saturday.

He added that the investigation found that the 37-year-old teacher had given the same punishment to other students.

“The investigation found that the victim, along with three other students, was punished to stand for 10 minutes.

“The investigation paper has been referred to the Selangor Deputy Public Prosecutor’s Office for further review,” he said.

He stated that the case is being investigated under Section 31(1) of the Child Act 2001.

On Friday, a video went viral on social media showing the mother of one of the involved students, along with a non-governmental organization (NGO), expressing dissatisfaction with the investigation and the handling of the case.
