Storm lines bring thunderstorms, heavy rain causes flooding in KL – MetMalaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: Flash floods around the capital this morning were caused by the movement of storm lines that brought with them thunderstorms and heavy rain.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) in a statement today informed that weather monitoring and radar image analysis showed that a line of thunderstorms formed in the Malacca Straits early this morning and started moving into Selangor at 7am.
“The intensity of the storm line is increasing and moving towards Kuala Lumpur at 8.30 am.
“Based on the rainfall in the Klang Valley for the period from 8 to 11 am today, the highest rainfall was recorded between 9 and 10 am,” according to the statement.
MetMalaysia informed that during the period from 9 am to 10 am, the meteorological station at the Federal Forest Reserve Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM) Kepong recorded a total of 53.5 milliliters (mm) of rain, the Klang Gate Dam (51.7 mm), and at the Malaysian Parliament (47.3 mm).
MetMalaysia informed that a warning expecting thunderstorms and heavy rain in the Klang Valley was issued as early as 6.30am and updated at 8.50am involving Kuala Lumpur.
“MetMalaysia’s weather warnings are constantly updated and disseminated through various mediums, such as the website, social media sites Facebook, Instagram, and X, as well as short message service (SMS),” said the statement.
Earlier this morning, several areas and main roads around Kuala Lumpur were flooded due to the overflow of the main rivers, namely Sungai Batu, Sungai Klang, and Sungai Gombak, due to heavy rain.
Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) informed that among the affected areas are Jalan Pantai Baharu, Jalan Parliament in Dato’ Onn Circle, Jalan Kinabalu, Jalan Maharajalela, Jalan Travers, and Jalan Damansara under the Semantan flyover.
Water also rises in Jalan Ledang, Jalan Segambut, Jalan Genting Klang in front of Shell and Tunku Abdul Rahman University, Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, and Jalan Sultan.
A landslide also occurred in Taman Melawati, Ampang, which caused 20 terrace houses to be cut off from the main road.
