Sicily’s main airport cuts down on flights due to eruption of Mount Etna

Spain: The main airport on the Italian island of Sicily on Sunday cut down on flight operations due to volcanic activity by Mount Etna.

“As a result of this morning’s volcanic activity, the crisis unit has ordered the closure of sector B1 and the reduction of arrivals to six flights per hour,” Catania Airport said in a statement.

“Passengers are requested to check the status of their flight with the airline if necessary,” the statement added.

“Another eruption at Mount Etna today caused multiple aircraft to hold before attempting approaches at Catania,” said Flightradar24.

Mount Etna, the tallest active volcano in Europe, last month sent ash 4.5 kilometers (2.7 miles) into the air.
