Sayap Bersekutu Bersatu rejects the proposal to reduce education subsidies for the rich

KUALA LUMPUR: Bersatu’s allied wing rejected Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s proposal to reduce education subsidies for those considered wealthy.

In a statement, the Head of Information of Bersatu’s allied wing, R Sri Sanjeevan, described the move as a step backwards in the effort to develop an inclusive national education system.

“This government’s latest proposal is not only a serious policy mistake but also a threat to Malaysia’s future.

This statement is not just a criticism but a call to all Malaysians to defend the foundations of democracy and social justice in our country,” said the statement.

Accordingly, Sayap Bersetutu Bersatu outlined some of the main reasons why the proposal should be rejected.

“First, a fair and inclusive education system is ‘the great equalizer’ for a society. History has proven that successful countries are those that invest without prejudice in the education of their people.

“By denying part of the community access to quality education, we are not only betraying the people but also thwarting the country’s potential,” said the statement.

At the same time, the statement informed that the unclear definition of “rich” opens the door to manipulation and injustice; even the term “rich” used in this proposal is not only vague but also dangerous, thus opening the door to injustice and discrimination.

“Even this proposal also has the potential to threaten the unity and competitiveness of the people. A strong public education system is the foundation of a competitive nation,” the statement said.

It is clear that the proposal is seen as a populist move that sacrifices the future of the country’s students just for short-term political gain.

“This proposal may lead to greater international implications and may even tarnish Malaysia’s image at the international level and contradict our commitment to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4, which emphasizes quality education for all,” said the statement. .

Accordingly, Sayap Bersekutu Bersatu urges the government to withdraw this proposal immediately and apologize to the people of Malaysia.

This includes launching a comprehensive plan to improve the quality of education and innovative funding of public education, including investing in educational innovation and teacher development to improve national education standards.
