Proposal for Jetty for Tourists and Divers at Labuan International Ferry Terminal

LABUAN: A proposal has been put forward to establish a dedicated jetty for tourists and divers at the existing Labuan International Ferry Terminal, aiming to boost the tourism sector of the tax-free island. Faizal Ibrahim Suhaili, the Director of the Labuan Fisheries Department, said the proposal received approval during the early engagement session earlier this year, involving various relevant government agencies.

“The initiative to create a special jetty for tourists and divers heading to popular islands and diving sites in Labuan is a recognition of the crucial role it can play in enhancing Labuan’s appeal as a tourist destination,” he told Bernama on Friday. Faizal Ibrahim mentioned that the Labuan International Ferry Terminal, with its existing facilities and the presence of local authorities such as Immigration and terminal operators, provides an ideal platform for monitoring and facilitating tourist movements.

“The Labuan International Ferry Terminal has facilities, including the availability of local authorities such as Immigration and terminal operators, to monitor the influx and outflow of tourists through this terminal,” he said. Similar to Jesselton Point in Kota Kinabalu, which offers services to tourists visiting Taman Tunku Abdul Rahman, Faizal Ibrahim said Labuan also needs a special jetty for visitors heading to the marine park.

“The proposed jetty is expected to serve as an easy entry point for tourists and scuba divers who want to explore popular islands and dive sites in Labuan. “Labuan has shipwrecks and the Vernon Bank scuba diving site, and the establishment of this jetty will facilitate tourists and divers in accessing these attractions,” he said. The newly appointed Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories), Dr. Zaliha Mustafa, expressed her commitment to transform Labuan into a hub for economic and tourism activities.

She stated that this vision aligns with the comprehensive goals of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for Labuan’s development, emphasizing its potential as a major player in Malaysia’s tourism landscape.
