PPRT is now known as Prosperous People’s Housing Program – Ahmad Zahid

KOTA TINGGI: The Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW) rebranded the Poor People’s Housing Program (PPRT) to the Prosperous People’s Housing Program (PPRS).

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development said the rebranding was aimed at changing the perception of the local community and the minds of the residents of the housing program.

The move, he said, also involved improving the specification of PPRS houses to 680 square feet compared to the previous 600 square feet and introducing the concept of rent-to-own or rent to buy for residents who plan to own a house they live in.

Ahmad Zahid, who was met by reporters after presenting the summary of the KKDW Settlement Program here today, said the improvement of the area of the house was made based on the standards and standards of the national housing policy.

“I hope this program will be followed by other ministries involved in providing homes for the people, especially the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT), the state government, the state housing department and local authorities (PBT).

“We must change this concept and not just follow the national housing policy, but also more comprehensively in changing the minds and tastes of the stakeholders involved, especially the buyers and residents of the low-cost houses,” he said.

Ahmad Zahid said for 2024, KKDW has allocated RM460.4 million to build 3,000 new PPRS units and refurbish 12,600 existing units.

The ministry also said it plans to build more PPRS under the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13).

“For RMK12, more than 10,000 units have been built. We are planning more for RMK13 because we know that costs can be reduced, especially the cost of land purchase, the cost of road infrastructure or access lanes to residential areas can be shared with the state government, PBT and government companies, ” he said.
