Police record statements of English-language portal staff over Forest City casino issue

KUALA LUMPUR: Police recorded the statement of a media personnel from an English-language portal to assist in the investigation regarding the publication of articles about a casino in Forest City on Monday.

Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said the individual attended to give their statement at 8.30 a.m., which was earlier than the originally scheduled time of 11 a.m.

“The Classified Crime Investigation Unit (USJT) of Bukit Aman recorded the statement of the individual, and we will also summon several other individuals to assist in the investigation,” he told the media during his visit to the Asia Defense Services Exhibition (DSA) and the Asia National Security Exhibition (NATSEC) Asia 2024 here on Monday.

Last Friday, Razarudin announced that an investigation was launched following a report made by businessman Tan Sri Vincent Tan’s lawyer regarding an allegedly defamatory article titled ‘Malaysia Mulls Casino at Forest City: Bloomberg’.

The investigation was initiated as the article was claimed to contain false, untrue, unreasonable, and unverified statements.

Therefore, the investigation is conducted under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act, Section 500 of the Penal Code, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Earlier, several parties urged the government to sue two foreign media agencies over reports of malicious intent regarding the planned construction of a casino in Forest City.

Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Berjaya, and Genting Malaysia also denied Bloomberg’s report regarding the construction plans of a casino in Forest City.
