Police deny attack on Faisal is related to ‘bookie’

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have refuted claims that the recent assault on two national football players is linked to a bookie who manipulates match outcomes. Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Razarudin Husain, urged the public not to fabricate untrue stories until investigations are conducted.

“Give us space and time to investigate this case,” he said while inspecting the Asia Defense Services Exhibition (DSA) and the Asia National Security Exhibition (NATSEC Asia) 2024 here on Monday.

Further commenting, he said the police are still conducting investigations to determine the actual motive behind the incident involving Selangor FC star and national squad member, Faisal Halim.

“At this time, let the police conduct the investigation to determine the actual motive behind this incident,” he said.
Razarudin stated that they have yet to confirm whether the attack on Faisal is related to the assault on another football player representing Terengganu FC, Akhyar Rashid, who was also attacked and robbed in Kuala Terengganu last Thursday.

“We (the police) hope that no party will speculate on this incident until the investigation is completed.

“At present, the Selangor Contingent Police have recorded statements from three individuals, including Faisal, and will summon several more independent witnesses, which is expected to be done today,” he said.

Earlier, Faisal suffered injuries to his arm and body after being attacked by an unidentified individual using a substance believed to be acid.

He was reportedly attacked while at a prominent supermarket in Kota Damansara, Petaling Jaya, around 5 p.m. on Sunday.
Meanwhile, last Thursday, national player and also Terengganu FC player, Akhyar, was assaulted before being robbed in Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu.

Akhyar was reportedly struck with a blunt weapon on the head, causing him injuries.

It is understood that the suspect fled with the player’s mobile phone and wallet before escaping.
