PJ Assunta girls school founder Enda Ryan dies
THE founder and headmistress of Assunta all-girls schools, Datin Paduka Enda Ryan has died.
The 96-year-old died at 11am today.
Sister Elizabeth Tan of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary (FMM) sisters announced the death of Sister Enda.
Sister Enda had made significant contributions throughout her lifetime – from championing women’s education to assisting FMM sisters in the growth of Ave Maria Clinic, which has expanded to Assunta Hospital today.
She was born Eileen Philomena Ryan on Dec 30, 1928, in Galbally, Ireland and arrived in Malaya in 1954 to help start schools for girls.
Among the schools was the Petaling Jaya Assunta girls’ schools in Selangor
Among its prominent alumni included former Bank Negara governor Tan Sri Dr Zeti Aziz, former Permatang Pauh lawmaker Nurul Izzah Anwar and Tan Sri Dr Jemilah Mahmood, the founder of Mercy Malaysia.
