Parents should ensure children under 13 do not have social media accounts – Fahmi

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) reminded parents to ensure that their children under the age of 13 do not have any social media accounts.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said this because MCMC found that children under the age of 13 are not suitable for using any social media platforms. Fahmi, who is also the Unity Government spokesperson, said most social media platform terms also do not allow such groups to have social media accounts.

“To the parents present tonight, I give a warning from MCMC: children under 13 are not allowed to have TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, or any other social media accounts.

“If there are children under 13 with social media accounts, parents, please inform me, MCMC… we will shut down those accounts,” he said while speaking at the Hari Raya Aidilfitri Open House in Lembah Pantai 2024 at IWK Eco Park@Lembah Pantai here tonight.

When approached by reporters, Fahmi explained that the issue of owning social media accounts at this time is that social media platforms completely hand over the account opening registration to users without a verification method that can ensure their age exceeds the permitted conditions.

He said as a follow-up, his team has held a series of meetings with relevant parties such as Meta, which manages Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp applications, and Telegram to present their plans to address the issue of underage social media account ownership.

“We see that there are several things from social media platforms that need to be informed to us first. My hope is that by early May, there will be announcements regarding discussions with all social media platforms, especially regarding online safety related to children,” he said.

Meanwhile, Fahmi, who is also the Member of Parliament for Lembah Pantai, called on the public to take the opportunity to strengthen ties, friendships, and unity among each other.

“We as Malaysia have strength based on diversity, diversity, and unity, and there is no other country like Malaysia that has a composition of races and backgrounds like our country,” he said.
