PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) revealed that the country lost RM277 billion due to corruption crimes over the past five years.

MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the loss was based on the cumulative estimate of gross domestic product (GDP) for the five-year period from 2018 to last year.

“This significant amount could have been utilized to assist the people in various aspects, especially in implementing social projects such as hospital and school renovations. Unfortunately, this value has been drained due to corruption crimes,” he said while speaking at the Launching Ceremony of the National Anti-Corruption Strategy (NACS) 2024-2028 at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC) here today.

The ceremony was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and attended by two Deputy Prime Ministers, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, as well as the Chief Secretary to the Government, Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali.

Therefore, Azam said, to ensure that the anti-corruption strategy has an impact, the formulation of the NACS is carried out using various approaches and methodologies to identify areas vulnerable to current corruption risks in the country.

He said the NACS outlines a crucial strategy by focusing on enhancing integrity, transparency, and accountability across various sectors in Malaysia, including politics, public administration, government procurement, law enforcement, legal and judicial institutions, the private sector, and the public.

“It incorporates five strategies and 60 sub-strategies to be implemented over a five-year period starting from this year until 2028.

“It is hoped that the implementation of the NACS will be a catalyst for efforts to strengthen good governance in the country to prevent and combat corruption, so that the agenda of developing Malaysia towards an integrity-driven and corruption-free nation can be realized,” he said.
