OIC Urged to Focus on Poverty Alleviation and Socioeconomic Development – Mohamad

KUALA LUMPUR: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) needs to focus on efforts to alleviate poverty and promote socioeconomic development to achieve the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030.

Therefore, the Foreign Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, emphasized that OIC member countries must intensify economic and trade cooperation in line with the OIC Action Plan 2016-2025.

“In an effort to strengthen economic cooperation, Malaysia is hosting the first phase of the International Conference on Islamic Economics and Finance 15th edition in March 2024 under the theme ‘Advancing the Agenda of Humanitarian Economic Sustainability.’

“The third phase will continue with the Global Forum on Islamic Economics and Finance on May 28 and 29, 2024, under the theme ‘Building Global Islamic Economic Resilience Through Value-Based Reforms’,” he said.

He said this while delivering a National Statement at the 15th OIC Summit Session on Saturday in Gambia.

According to Mohamad, the forum will focus on the importance of Islamic economics and finance as a solution to sustainable, resilient, and equitable economic development.

In the same statement, the Foreign Minister also urged the OIC to continue its efforts to assist minority Muslim groups and communities outside OIC member countries, including the Rohingya ethnic group, to uphold dignity, identity, and welfare.

“Malaysia has played a role by organizing the 8th OIC-IPHRC (Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission) International Seminar: Islamic Perspectives on Refugee Protection in October 2022.

“The seminar has resulted in the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on Rights and Access to Education for Refugees, as a guideline for OIC member countries to provide educational access to refugees in their respective countries,” he added.
