Music Malaysia Commends Immigration Department’s Arrest of Foreign Artist Performing Illegally in KL

KUALA LUMPUR:The Immigration Department’s recent capture of a foreign performer at a federal capital club was applauded by the non- gobvernmental organization Music Malaysia,
which is the voice of fifteen major music industry associations.

They wholeheartedly support the department’s efforts to stop such artists from abusing social visit cards by ignoring national rules and trying to get around them for personal gain, according to a statement released today by its chairman, Datuk Freddie Fernandez.

“Such artistes’ actions make it very unfair to Malaysian artistes, organisers and club owners who take the trouble to apply for the necessary permits through the government’s one-stop approval agency Puspal (Central Agency for Application for Filming and Performance by Foreign Artistes) and pay the necessary taxes as required by the law,” he said.

Fernandez added that violations such as this one were becoming rampant in the music industry and the department had made the right move to ensure that only those performers who received the necessary approvals and paid the levies and taxes were allowed to perform in Malaysia.

“We wish to call on all club owners and event organisers to adhere to the laws set down for foreign performers who wish to perform here and take heed of the warning by the Immigration Department that stern action would be taken against anyone who violates the law.”

It is learnt that the foreign artiste was from India and was among six people detained by the Immigration Department for abuse of their social visit pass, which prohibits them from seeking employment during their stay in Malaysia.
