Meta’s ugly act, contempt for the suffering of the Palestinian people — Prime Minister’s Office

PUTRAJAYA: Meta’s action to downgrade some of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s messages about the death of Hamas Political Bureau Chief Ismail Haniyeh is ugly and discriminatory.

The Media and Strategic Communications Division, Prime Minister’s Office, confirmed in a statement on Monday that Anwar’s sharing through the Facebook and Instagram platforms was only to express condolences and respect for the passing of the Palestinian struggle figure.

In addition, the Prime Minister’s Office insists Meta is unfair and restricts freedom of expression, in addition to insulting the legitimate struggle of the Palestinian people to demand justice and human rights.

“We also affirmed that the act of putting down the posting has had a profound effect on the people of Malaysia and the world community, who understand the suffering of the Palestinian people and oppose the tyranny of the Zionist Israeli regime as etched in the folds of history.

“The unilateral decision to censor content without considering the context of the posting clearly raises questions about transparency in Meta’s content censoring policy,” he stressed.

He said that Meta’s representatives had been called to explain to the Minister of Communications, Fahmi Fadzil, and the Chairman of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din, regarding the action to reduce the transmission.

In a related development, the Prime Minister’s Office said it also regrets the incident of blocking live broadcasts through Facebook involving a television news account that broadcast the Palestine Liberation Rally on Sunday.

“Thus, the Prime Minister’s Office has demanded a number of things, including a detailed explanation regarding the actions taken by Meta as well as a public apology from Meta.

“As promised in this meeting, a media statement will be issued by Meta in the near future,” he added.
