Malaysia welcomes the decision of the International Court of Justice on the Palestinian issue
PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia welcomes the historic decision of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in favor of Palestine.
The Court’s decision was delivered through an Advisory Opinion relating to the Legal Effects Arising from Israeli Policies and Practices in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, including East Jerusalem, on Friday.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia said that this ICJ decision confirmed the Malaysian legal argument that had been presented by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan while in court on February 22.
“Malaysia urges all countries to insist that Israel accept and comply with the ICJ decision and immediately stop all their support for Israel from continuing its illegal occupation in the Palestinian Territories,” he said.
The International Court of Justice has ruled by an overwhelming majority that Israel’s continued occupation of the Occupied Palestinian Territory is illegal under international law and must be stopped immediately.
All new occupation activities should be stopped and all destruction should be compensated.
“This court decision upholds the absolute right of the Palestinian people to determine their own destiny. Israel’s actions and policies were found to violate international law,” he said.
Malaysia will continue to support and fight for the formation of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state based on the pre-1967 delimitation, with East Jerusalem as the capital, apart from Palestine being accepted as a full member of the United Nations (UN).
It said the court also emphasized the joint responsibility of all countries and international organizations in ending Israel’s illegal occupation.
