Malaysia urges the D-8 countries not to extend aid to Israel
PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia urges member countries of the Group of Eight Developing Countries (D-8) not to provide funds or aid to Israel, including economic cooperation that contributes to the financing of its military and illegal occupation of Palestine.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said this in response to the struggle of the Palestinian people in his speech at the Emergency Meeting of the D-8 Council of Foreign Ministers in Istanbul, Turkey on Saturday.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Wisma Putra) in its statement on Sunday said Mohamad, who emphasized Malaysia’s stance on the Palestinian issue, emphasized three more points at the meeting, namely urging the D-8 to unanimously support a permanent and effective ceasefire in Gaza, increase humanitarian aid and ensure aid can be delivered safely and without hindrance to the Palestinian people, in addition to officially establishing cooperation between the D-8 and Palestine.
According to Wisma Putra’s statement, Malaysia and the other D-8 member countries have jointly expressed their solidarity and support for the struggle of the Palestinian people, as outlined in the Emergency Meeting Declaration that has been approved.
“Malaysia and the other D-8 member countries strongly condemn Israel’s continued acts of terrorism in the Gaza Strip and the entire occupied Palestinian Territory.
The declaration also demands an immediate, permanent and unconditional ceasefire, in addition to supporting all efforts to empower the Palestinian economy and rebuild Gaza following the withdrawal of the Israeli army,” he said.
During his visit to Turkiye, Mohamad also paid a courtesy call on his counterpart Hakan Fidan.
“The meeting that took place between the two ministers revolved around various international, regional and bilateral issues that touch on mutual interests, especially the situation in Gaza.
He also exchanged views with Fidan on how D-8 can increase efforts to find a solution to the suffering of the Palestinian people, said Wisma Putra.
Malaysia’s participation in the emergency meeting is part of the country’s ongoing efforts on various platforms to support Palestine and find a way to end Israeli atrocities there.
