Malaysia targets 100,000 metric tons of local meat by 2030 – Mohamad Sabu
BACHOK: The government is targeting 100,000 metric tons of local meat production by 2030.
Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu hopes that the target can be reached 100 percent in the near future or at least 50 percent.
“The country needs 200,000 metric tons of beef a year for the needs of the people and still needs to import 80 percent of the meat to meet the people’s demand.
“The current supply of meat is around 20 percent equivalent to 47,000 metric tons,” he told reporters after holding an official working visit and inaugurating HL Agro Farm KB Sdn Bhd in Kampung Sri Kemunting, Gunong, here today.
Mohamad said in order to reduce imports and dependence on meat from abroad in the future, the government will help increase the number of livestock and production.
“Cooperation with the state government is important because land owned by the state government such as farmland in Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Johor can still be cultivated.
Commenting further, Mohamad said the government also channeled allocations to farmers who had just started their business by providing assistance of about RM20,000 per person.
Meanwhile, he said the ministry has guaranteed sufficient supply of beef for sacrifices on Aidiladha, including a guarantee that there will be no significant increase in the price of meat.
