Malaysia needs to seriously develop TVET, win gold at WSC 2026 in Shanghai

Lyon (France): The outstanding achievement of Malaysian youth at the WorldSkills competition (WSC 2024) proves that Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) is now gaining world attention and is on the right track.

One bronze and four ‘Medallions for Excellence’ harvested at the world’s largest skills stage is a proud achievement and proves that TVET is important for producing highly skilled youth in line with industry requirements.

It also reflects that the country’s TVET institutions are able to produce highly skilled talents, and some of them have even been offered job opportunities before they finish their education.

More comprehensive disclosure also needs to be given to the youth that TVET not only guarantees job opportunities but also offers knowledge exploration at an international level through WSC, both at the Asean, Asian, and global level.

Although the WSC has received little attention in this country, the competition stage is highly anticipated by youth in Europe, China, Japan, and South Korea, who send many representatives in each skill segment to assess the level of competitiveness of their youth.

The competition over 20 hours over a period of four days clearly tests the mental, physical, and thinking levels of the youth through various modules and surprise tasks by experts in the field of skills.

Malaysia needs to be serious about promoting TVET and developing youth talent because countries like Singapore and Indonesia are now progressing, as evidenced by their success in winning gold at the WSC 2024.

In fact, larger allocations should be channeled to TVET to allow some new fields such as water technology, cyber security, and digital marketing to be explored.

Although Malaysia has yet to reap the gold at WSC 2024, it is not too late to rise again by presenting a more brilliant performance at the next edition, which is WSC 2026 in Shanghai, China. Hello! (Goodbye) Lyon and Welcome Shanghai.

The WSC is organized every two years to improve the skills and competitiveness of world-class youth and workers.

The WSC 2024 from September 10 to 15 brought together 1,400 competitors from over 70 countries and regions competing in 62 skill categories.
