Malaysia Evacuates 164 Citizens from West Asia Conflict Zones in Urgent Government Operation

JEDDAH — A total of 164 Malaysians who had been stranded in several West Asian countries amid escalating regional tensions are returning home through a government-organised evacuation mission aimed at safeguarding citizens caught in the conflict zone.

The group, which includes students, travellers and umrah pilgrims, departed from King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah aboard a specially chartered Malaysia Airlines aircraft as part of Operation Evacuation of Malaysians from the West Asia Conflict Zone.

In addition to the Malaysian citizens, the flight also carried five Thai nationals who are family members of Malaysians involved in the evacuation, as well as one Indonesian national.

All 170 passengers are expected to arrive at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) at approximately 11am on Wednesday.

Evacuees Gathered from Four Countries

National Security Council (NSC) Crisis Management Division Deputy Director Fauzan Amin Misnon said the Malaysians involved in the evacuation were previously located in four countries affected by the regional instability.

They were brought together from Saudi Arabia, Syria, Jordan and Qatar before being transported to Jeddah for the return flight to Malaysia.

Fauzan, who was present in Saudi Arabia to assist in coordinating the evacuation effort, said the operation was successfully carried out through strong cooperation between Malaysian government agencies and diplomatic missions abroad.

“The operation to bring them home was carried out smoothly thanks to the close cooperation of Malaysia’s diplomatic representatives in Jeddah,” he said.

He explained that the evacuees had voluntarily registered through an online system provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, allowing authorities to coordinate their safe return.

Evacuation Ordered to Protect Malaysians Abroad

The mission was launched following instructions from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who directed relevant agencies to take immediate action to protect Malaysians located in areas affected by rising tensions in West Asia.

Authorities mobilised resources quickly to ensure that citizens in the affected areas could be evacuated safely and efficiently.

Fauzan said the government remained committed to prioritising the welfare and safety of Malaysians abroad, particularly during periods of geopolitical instability.

Most Passengers in Good Condition

According to Fauzan, the majority of the evacuees were reported to be in good health during the evacuation process.

However, two passengers required special medical attention due to pre-existing health conditions.

Medical assistance and monitoring were provided to ensure their wellbeing throughout the journey.

Authorities also ensured that the evacuees were given necessary support before boarding the chartered aircraft.

Short Timeframe for Boarding Process

The chartered Malaysia Airlines Airbus A330-300 aircraft landed at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah at around 8.35pm local time on Tuesday.

Officials were given only a limited window of time to complete the boarding process and prepare the passengers for departure.

Despite the time constraints, Malaysian officials were able to coordinate the evacuation successfully through close cooperation between the National Security Council, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Malaysia’s diplomatic missions in the region.

Media Coverage of Evacuation Operation

The evacuation flight also included members of the Malaysian media who were assigned to document the mission.

Among them were journalists and photographers from the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama), along with a cameraman from Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM).

Their presence ensured that the evacuation effort could be reported to the public while the mission was being carried out.

Rising Tensions in West Asia Prompt Global Concern

The evacuation operation comes as tensions in West Asia continue to escalate following a series of military confrontations involving major global powers.

The latest conflict began on February 28 when Israel and the United States launched strikes against Iran.

Tehran subsequently responded with retaliatory attacks targeting American interests in the Gulf region, raising concerns of broader instability in the region.

The developments have prompted several governments to monitor the situation closely and take precautionary measures to protect their citizens in the affected areas.

Malaysia’s evacuation operation reflects the government’s swift response in ensuring the safety of its citizens abroad.

Authorities said the situation in West Asia continues to be monitored closely, and further assistance will be provided to Malaysians who may still be in the region.
