Landslide: 52 residents were ordered to evacuate their homes
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 52 residents of 17 terraced houses in Taman Bunga Raya, Jalan Genting Klang near Wardieburn Camp were ordered to evacuate immediately after part of the earth retaining wall collapsed due to heavy rain yesterday.
Wangsa Maju District Police Chief ACP Mohamad Lazim Ismail said the victims, consisting of 26 men and 26 women, were placed temporarily either in the homes of immediate family, hotels or at the Temporary Placement Center (PPS) opened at the Bunga Raya Badminton Hall.
“In the incident at about 5.30 in the afternoon, we instructed the residents of 17 units of terraced houses to go out and vacate their homes on the advice of the fire department because the place was at risk for a while.
“So far, the house that was claimed to have been affected yesterday appears to have been unaffected and there are about two feet left from the rubble area, but due to the moving ground factor, we have instructed them to move,” he said.
He said this when met by reporters after attending the Dang Wangi District Police Chief Handover Ceremony at Dang Wangi IPD, here today.
Mohamad Lazim said the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) will continue the cleaning work today.
“So far, we have not yet been able to measure the collapsed area following yesterday’s dark conditions which did not allow, including checking the strength of the ground.
“The situation there has been under control since last night because we have also stationed a mobile police station there and the fire department has also closed the road since yesterday and reopened this morning, it will only be closed again for DBKL to continue the cleaning work,” he said.
The duration of the evacuation of the residents could not be determined because the discussion about the area is under the supervision of local authorities, he added.
This morning, Kuala Lumpur Deputy Chief of Police Datuk Azry Akmar Ayob was present to witness the handing over ceremony of the Dang Wangi District Police Chief at the Dang Wangi IPD here today.
The handover of the task was between acting Dang Wangi District Police Chief Supt Nuzulan Mohd Din and the new Dang Wangi District Police Chief ACP Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman.
Previously, Sulizmie Affendy served as the Chief Assistant Director of Intelligence/Special Investigations of the Intelligence and Special Investigations Branch of the Wildlife Crime Bureau/Intelligence and Special Investigations Division, Department of Internal Security and Public Order, Bukit Aman.
