Japan: Man Arrested for Creating Malware Using Generative AI

Tokyo police have arrested a 25-year-old man for allegedly creating malware using generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools available online for free, reports Jiji Press.

Ryuki Hayashi, from Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, south of Tokyo, was detained by the Metropolitan Police Department on suspicion of creating unauthorized electronic records.

According to the police, there have only been a few cases where law enforcement has taken action against the creation of malware through the use of generative AI technology.

Hayashi, who has admitted to the charges, reportedly stated that he wanted to “make money easily” and believed he “could do anything” using AI.

Hayashi is suspected of creating the malware in March last year by combining the design of illegal malware programs obtained through the use of interactive generative AI tools.
