‘I Won’t Back Down’: Activist Cikgu Chandra Remains Defiant After Arson and Threat Incidents
KUALA LUMPUR — Community activist S. Chandrasegaran, widely known as Cikgu Chandra, has reaffirmed his commitment to continue speaking out on issues affecting local communities despite a series of threatening incidents involving his home and vehicle in Puchong.
The activist said the recent attacks, which included a trespass at his residence and the burning of a vehicle believed to belong to him, would not intimidate him into silence or force him to abandon the causes he has long championed.
Instead, he described the incidents as a challenge that has strengthened his resolve to continue raising concerns about matters he believes are critical to the well-being of the community.
Determined to Remain in His Community
Chandra said he has no intention of leaving the neighbourhood where he lives despite the threats and acts of vandalism that have taken place.
According to him, relocating would mean surrendering to intimidation, something he refuses to do.
“I will not move anywhere and I will not flee from this area,” he said when contacted for comment.
Chandra also expressed confidence that many Malaysians support his advocacy efforts, particularly those who share concerns about land encroachment and criminal activities affecting neighbourhoods.
He added that he remains in good condition and has received strong encouragement from his family and members of the public following the incidents.
The activist revealed that several individuals, including journalists, had contacted him to ask whether the attacks would cause him to reconsider his activism.
Incidents Reinforce His Commitment
However, Chandra made it clear that the incidents have not shaken his determination.
“My answer is clear — I will not stop. If anything, these events have only strengthened my determination to continue speaking out,” he said.
Chandra has been known as an outspoken figure who frequently raises issues related to land disputes and alleged criminal activities that he claims affect local communities.
His advocacy has drawn considerable public attention, with supporters praising his courage in highlighting matters that impact residents.
Authorities Launch Investigations
Meanwhile, police have launched investigations into the incidents involving the activist.
Authorities confirmed that two police reports were lodged regarding events that occurred in the Taman Kinrara residential area on March 9 and again the following day.
Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said the first case is being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code for mischief and Section 506 for criminal intimidation.
Another investigation paper has also been opened under Section 435 of the Penal Code in relation to mischief by fire involving a vehicle at the same location.
Police are currently conducting detailed investigations to determine the motive behind the incidents and to identify those responsible.
Public Asked to Avoid Speculation
Authorities have urged the public not to engage in speculation that could interfere with the ongoing investigations.
Police also warned that strict action will be taken against anyone who violates the law or spreads information that could disrupt public order.
Members of the public who possess relevant information have been encouraged to come forward and assist the authorities.
Despite the threats and damage to his property, Chandra reiterated that he will continue his activism and remain committed to raising issues affecting local communities, saying that intimidation will not deter him from his mission.
