I Saw the Roof Fall on the Car – Putra Ria Apartment Resident

KUALA LUMPUR: At least six residential units were affected after a roof was blown off by strong winds, damaging six cars and three motorcycles in an incident around 5 PM yesterday at Block 94, Putra Ria Apartment, Bangsar.

A resident, M. Santha Kumari, 41, said her home on the 20th floor of the 22-story apartment was not affected, but the rear window of her brother’s car was shattered in the incident.

“During the incident, I saw the roof fall, and right in front of my eyes, it fell on my brother’s car. The wind was very strong, and it was raining. There were many children in my house, and my brother’s wife had just given birth, so we were really worried,” she said when we met at the scene yesterday.

Santha Kumari, who was shocked by the incident, was nonetheless grateful that all residents were safe and that only property was damaged.

Abu Bakar Hasnah, 43, who had just returned to his mother’s home, was surprised by the loud crash.

“I rushed out of the house and saw the roof scattered on the ground, hitting cars in the parking area below the block.

“My wife managed to record a video of the incident,” he said, adding that the roof is believed to be 10 to 20 years old since the building was constructed.

Deputy Chairman of the Pantai Valley Residents’ Representative Council Sub Zone 1, Abdul Haniff Sulaiman, said that there is a unit on the 22nd floor that requires immediate action as almost the entire roof was blown off.

He stated that this was the first time such an incident had occurred and that almost all affected vehicle owners had reported it to the authorities, while the roofing contractor had already made an assessment for immediate action.

“We have also reported to DBKL (Kuala Lumpur City Hall), and they came tonight. The management company, Intra Harta Consultant Sdn Bhd, also came to file a report.

“There were also representatives from the Lembah Pantai Member of Parliament’s office (Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil) who were instructed by Fahmi to set up an operations room for affected residents to file all necessary reports,” he said.
