High Court Confirms 10-Year Jail Term for Trader in Pregnant Wife Assault Case

JOHOR BAHRU, Nov 4 — A Malaysian trader who brutally beat his pregnant wife into a coma has lost his appeal, with the High Court upholding his 10-year prison sentence.

Judge Atan Mustaffa Yussof Ahmad ruled that the conviction against Rosmaini Abd Raof, 42, was based on strong, credible evidence. “The court finds no error in the Sessions Court’s decision,” he said.

Rosmaini’s appeal to overturn the verdict — and a counter-appeal from prosecutors seeking a heavier sentence — were both dismissed.

His wife, Jahidah Nordin @ Sylvester, then six months pregnant, sustained catastrophic brain injuries in the 2021 assault and remains in a coma requiring full-time care.

“Medical reports show the victim suffered severe head trauma and needed brain surgery. The accused also attempted to flee police arrest,” said the judge.

The victim later delivered a baby boy, Eshan Nufail, by caesarean section in November 2021. The child was later diagnosed with permanent disabilities.

Rosmaini’s prison term remains intact, though the court allowed a temporary stay of imprisonment pending appeal to the Court of Appeal. His bail was increased to RM25,000, and he remains prohibited from contacting the victim or witnesses.

The case, which drew public outrage in Malaysia, highlights ongoing concerns about domestic violence and accountability under the Penal Code’s Section 325, which carries up to 20 years’ imprisonment for causing grievous harm.
