Gentari Partners with Lazada to Accelerate Green Transportation Ecosystem Development
PETALING JAYA: Clean energy solutions provider Gentari Sdn Bhd, through its subsidiary Gentari Green Mobility Sdn Bhd, is expanding efforts to drive green mobility adoption by partnering with Lazada Malaysia to begin electrifying its logistics operations.
This initiative offers a long-term hassle-free electric vehicle (EV) leasing solution under Gentari’s “Vehicle-as-a-Service” (VaaS) plan, starting with the introduction of 25 electric motorcycles (eBikes) for last-mile deliveries.
According to Gentari’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Chief Executive Officer of Gentari Green Mobility, Shah Yang Razalli, Malaysia has one of the highest vehicle ownership rates in East Asia. The transportation sector is responsible for the second-highest carbon emissions in the country, with 85 percent contributed by land transport.
While green mobility efforts have primarily focused on four-wheeled vehicles, there has been little attention given to the 13 million two-wheeled vehicles in the country, including 150,000 gig economy riders, a number expected to grow to 250,000 by 2025.
By introducing two-wheeled EVs as part of the VaaS offering aimed at facilitating business transitions to EVs, this initiative can help reduce carbon emissions from the vehicle sector.
“Today, our focus on making commercial fleets more sustainable helps drive the transition across various layers of the economy and society, particularly in the crucial last-mile delivery sector. Gentari’s strategy aligns with national goals such as the Energy Transition Roadmap and the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) reporting mandate by Bursa Malaysia, encouraging companies to adopt green mobility.”
With a vision to become the most valued clean energy solutions partner in the Asia-Pacific region, Gentari is committed to ensuring safety, reliability, convenience, and value for its customers. Currently, Gentari has the largest licensed EV charging network in Malaysia. Shah Yang Razalli mentioned that they are working to provide charging connectivity every 100 kilometers nationwide, supporting the country’s transition to sustainable transportation with greater confidence.
Gentari operates over 400 EV charging points, including 120 DC fast chargers, making it the largest fast charger operator nationwide. With extensive charger availability at 105 locations, Gentari offers reliable and efficient solutions, ensuring smooth EV integration into daily operations for businesses and individuals.
Gentari’s VaaS offering has deployed over 3,400 vehicles to help businesses in Malaysia and the region decarbonize their fleet operations with fully electric cars, motorcycles, and vans. Shah added that partnerships with companies like Lazada Malaysia accelerate the adoption of green energy not only by providing EV solutions but also by building the infrastructure to make the EV ecosystem more efficient and accessible.
Lazada Malaysia’s Chief Logistics Officer, Venkat Shankar, expressed excitement about the collaboration with Gentari, highlighting their dedication to ESG principles and the drive towards a greener future.
“This collaboration sets a new environmental standard in the logistics sector, not only enhancing our operational efficiency but also reducing our carbon footprint. It reflects our commitment to supporting Malaysia’s journey towards environmental sustainability, and we look forward to working with Gentari to bring about this positive change, one delivery at a time.”
Gentari’s effort to promote the electrification of commercial fleets aligns with the government’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 as outlined in the National Energy Transition Roadmap, targeting the electrification of 80 percent of two-wheeled vehicles by 2050, supported by tax incentives up to RM2,400.
Speaking at the launch event at X Park Sunway Serena on Wednesday, Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Aziz expressed pleasure in seeing companies contribute to sustainability targets under policies like the Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint 2021-2030 (LCMB) and the New Industrial Master Plan 2030.
He noted that the Gentari-Lazada collaboration showcases industry efforts to promote electric and green mobility while facilitating the nation’s transition towards sustainable transportation.
“This fleet leasing model, which complements the Electric Motorcycle Usage Incentive Scheme (MARiiCas), efficiently democratizes EV access for all societal layers, advocating an inclusive and sustainable vehicle ownership model benefiting more users. As Malaysia proactively welcomes more investments in green technology solutions and innovations, these efforts collectively drive large-scale ESG adoption by industries in the country, moving us towards Malaysia’s net-zero goal.”
