FBI says it is investigating Trump campaign hack
WASHINGTON : The FBI announced Monday that it is investigating allegations that the Trump campaign was hacked following claims by former president and Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump that Iranian operatives were involved.
The FBI refrained from providing further details on the extent of the investigation or on any potential suspects.
The investigation comes just days after the Trump campaign reported that sensitive internal documents had been compromised, suggesting foreign interference in the upcoming 2024 presidential election.
While the FBI did not explicitly name Iran in its statement, it acknowledged the reports of a “campaign cyber intrusion.”
The Trump campaign has not provided specific evidence linking Iran to the hack but pointed to a recent Microsoft report detailing attempts by foreign agents to interfere with US presidential campaigns.
The report highlighted an incident in June where an Iranian military intelligence unit dispatched “a spear-phishing email to a senior official of a presidential campaign using a compromised email account belonging to a former senior advisor.”
The Iranian government has denied any involvement in the alleged cyberattack.
