EAIC received a memorandum on the issue of threats to the environment, the lives of the country’s coastal fishermen
PUTRAJAYA: The Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) received a memorandum from the Malaysian Coastal Fishermen’s Network Education and Welfare Association (JARING) regarding issues that threaten the environment and the lives of the nation’s coastal fishermen.
EAIC chairman Tan Sri Ismail Bakar said the memorandum demanded immediate action to stop the use of trawls, which resulted in a shortage of fishery resources and created conflicts with coastal fishermen.
He stated that JARING also urged departments and agencies that regulate the country’s waters and fisheries to improve their management and enforcement.
“EAIC is aware of the importance of the issues raised by JARING and will review every proposal submitted to find a comprehensive solution,” he said in a statement issued here yesterday.
Ismail stated that the commission would collaborate with the relevant enforcement agencies, particularly the Fisheries Department and the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM), when dealing with fisheries and the country’s waters, to ensure that measures taken are legal.
He stated that the move was necessary to ensure security, justice, and transparency in on-the-ground operations, as well as to protect the country’s integrity.
He stated that the EAIC will continue to play an active role in ensuring the integrity and effectiveness of law enforcement, particularly when it comes to environmental sustainability and the well-being of Malaysia’s coastal fishing communities.
