Dropping the PM may be a higher level action at Meta – Fahmi
KUALA LUMPUR: The act of taking down Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim regarding the killing of Hamas Political Bureau Chief Ismail Haniyeh on Facebook may have been done by higher levels in Meta Platforms Inc (Meta) and not by their team in Southeast Asia, said Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.
He said in a series of discussions with Meta management at the Southeast Asia level so far, the parties involved gave the impression that they were not the ones who uploaded the posts on the Facebook and Instagram platforms.
“There is a possibility it happened at a higher level. The Meta team in this region is also confused why it happened, so I don’t blame them because this is not an action on their part (Meta Southeast Asia) so we wait for a deeper explanation .
“I understand there will probably be a Meta delegation coming to Kuala Lumpur, maybe next week, to explain what actually happened, so we give them time,” he told reporters.
He was found after accompanying the Prime Minister to perform Friday prayers and following a special sermon in conjunction with Heroes’ Day 2024 titled Struggle for the Love of Nusa at the National Mosque here today.
Also present were Defense Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar and Commander of the Armed Forces Gen Tan Sri Mohammad Ab Rahman.
Fahmi said the act of dropping a pass by Meta, like what happened to the Prime Minister, should not happen to anyone.
“It’s quite funny when the United States chants freedom of speech and freedom of expression, but I see Meta in this chapter: they should practice what they often fight for; otherwise, it’s hypocracy,” he said.
Iranian media reported that Haniyeh was killed in an airstrike allegedly carried out by Israel at his accommodation north of Tehran at around 2am local time on Wednesday.
Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Iran’s new President, Masoud Pezeshkian.
