Dr. Dzulkefly Ahmad Returns to Lead Ministry of Health: A Profile of Kuala Selangor MP’s Reshuffled Appointment

Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, the Member of Parliament for Kuala Selangor, has been appointed to lead the Ministry of Health (MOH) once again in a Cabinet reshuffle unveiled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today.

Dr. Dzulkefly previously served as the Health Minister for 22 months during the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government, from May 21, 2018, to Feb 24, 2020. During his tenure, he navigated the initial challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic in the country and implemented measures such as a smoking ban in all food premises.

The 67-year-old politician holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Medical Sciences (Toxicology) from Imperial College, University of London. He earned a Master of Science degree from the University of Surrey and a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Birmingham, England.

Before entering politics, Dr. Dzulkefly worked as a lecturer at the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang, and at Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM), Kelantan.

His political journey includes unsuccessful attempts in the 10th and 11th general elections, but he secured victory in the 12th general election by winning the Kuala Selangor parliamentary seat. Despite losing in the 13th general election, he made a comeback in the 14th general election, reclaiming the Kuala Selangor seat. He retained the seat in the 15th general election in a competitive four-cornered contest, securing a majority of 1,002 votes.

As the Strategy Director of Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah), Dr. Dzulkefly brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to his renewed role at the helm of the Ministry of Health.
