Digital Billboard on Federal Highway Catches Fire, Firefighters Rescue Nine Victims

KUALA LUMPUR: A digital billboard on the side of the Federal Highway in Petaling Jaya near here was reported to have caught fire, believed to have occurred at 1:25 PM earlier today. A video of the fire went viral on social media, showing thick smoke billowing out from the billboard.

Additionally, several social media account owners claimed that there were individuals, purportedly workers, performing maintenance work on top of the signboard when the fire broke out.

Based on the viral video, the individuals involved were seen descending from the billboard, while firefighters were already at the scene to carry out firefighting operations.

Deputy Chief of the Petaling Jaya District Police, Supt M Hussin Sollehuddin Zolkifly, confirmed the incident when contacted and said further investigations were underway.

A total of nine individuals were rescued in the fire incident involving a digital billboard on the Federal Highway on Friday afternoon.

The Selangor Fire and Rescue Department, in a statement, informed that all victims were handed over to the medical team of the Ministry of Health (MOH) for further action.

According to Deputy Commander of Fire and Rescue II Operations, Rosman Majid, the Petaling Jaya Fire and Rescue Station received an emergency call regarding the incident at 1:15 PM.

“Two fire engines with a total of 17 personnel were deployed to the scene.

“Upon arrival, the operations team (PKO) found that there was indeed a fire involving a large billboard.

“The personnel then proceeded to extinguish the fire, and the operation ended around 3:45 PM,” he said.
