Deepavali carnival drives the local economy, potentially becoming an annual attraction – Dr Zaliha
KUALA LUMPUR: The Deepavali Carnival is not only able to stimulate the economy of local residents, especially the B40 and M40 groups, but has the potential to become an annual event that can attract the interest of domestic and international tourists.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories), Dr. Zaliha Mustafa, said the event was also a platform to raise awareness about the uniqueness and diversity of local culture, thus making it a valuable tourist attraction.
“This initiative is expected to stimulate the local economy and give opportunities to small entrepreneurs to showcase their products,” he told reporters after visiting the 22nd Deepavali Carnival (DC24) organized by Agenda Suria Communication at the Bukit Jalil Sports Complex here yesterday.
He said the organization of similar events in other areas can be considered to open up opportunities for interested individuals or organizations, but the location selection must be conducive, including not disturbing the flow of traffic and the harmony of local residents.
DC24, which runs from Oct 22 to 30 and is held at Open Parking B, is expected to attract over 400,000 visitors.
Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Agenda Suria Communications Jaggarao Simancha said DC24, which ran from noon to 10 pm, had received more than 150,000 visitors on its fifth day.
He said the event continues to be well received every year and is now the focus of the Indian community in making preparations to celebrate the Festival of Lights.
