DBKL monitors flash floods through a 24-hour operation room – Dr Zaliha

KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has activated the motion room to monitor any incidents, especially floods, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territory) Dr Zaliha Mustafa.

He said the movement room was monitored by members on duty through closed circuit recording cameras (CCTV) to detect any rise in the water level in the identified areas.

According to him, among the 24 areas identified as flood hotspots around Kuala Lumpur are Jalan Pudu, Jalan Sultan, Bulatan Dato’ Onn, Jalan Peel, Jalan Maharajalela, and Jalan Genting Klang.

“If we detect an increase in the water level, immediate action will be taken,” he told reporters after inspecting the flooded area at Universiti Malaya (UM) here today.

Also present were Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil and Political Secretary to the Prime Minister Datuk Ahmad Farhan Fauzi.

Meanwhile, Dr. Zaliha explained that the flood that hit 24 flash flood hotspot locations in the capital around 8.30 this morning was due to very high rainfall, reaching 118 millimeters (mm) per hour.

He said flood mitigation this morning was carried out quickly in certain areas, including the activation of five pumps around the capital as well as the control of traffic congestion by the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department.

Regarding the flood at UM, he informed me that no resident students were involved and mitigation actions were successfully implemented quickly by the responsible party because the university has its own flood warning system.

He said the vehicles parked in the area were successfully moved, and only around six vehicles were affected.

He said that apart from that, reservoir d) in the UM area, which can hold up to 16,000 cubic meters of water, also needs to be maintained.

“If we can carry out work to remove sediment from the pond, its water holding capacity will increase, and this can reduce the risk of flooding when heavy rains occur again,” he said.
