Crowds Fill Dataran Merdeka To Dance Despite Heavy Rain

Kuala Lumpur: Despite heavy rain hitting Dataran Merdeka on last Saturday, hundreds of visitors still came to enliven the Merdeka Art Stage, which took place in the city center as part of the KL Creative Festival. This event highlights the beauty of Malay Ronggeng, presented by Nusantara Performing Arts Research Center (NusPARC) and Nyala Dance Theatre, together with talented local dancers.

The Merdeka Art Stage, now in its third year, continues to bring the spirit of Malaysian history and culture to life in the heart of the Dataran Merdeka Heritage Area. This initiative is a positive result of the Memorandum of Understanding between Think City and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), in line with the Kuala Lumpur Creative and Cultural Master Plan and Civil Economy Framework. It aims to transform the city center into a recognized creative destination, activating public spaces through art and culture.

In addition to traditional performances by NusPARC and Nyala Dance Theatre, this event was also enlivened with performances by the DBKL Cultural Combo, DBKL Cultural Artists, and DBKL Children’s Dance Artists. Popular singer Syura and host DJ Sonic Hussein also livened up the stage, energizing the atmosphere despite the pouring rain.

YBhg. Dato’ Seri TPr (Dr.) Maimunah binti Mohd Sharif, Mayor of Kuala Lumpur, added prestige to this event with her presence. He stated, “Kuala Lumpur has great potential to be recognized as a UNESCO Creative City. Programs such as Pentas Seni Merdeka are a real example of how we can strengthen the city’s position nationally and internationally.”

YB Khairul Firdaus bin Akbar Khan, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, also voiced his views, stating that this event is in line with Core 3 of the National Cultural Policy (DAKEN), which emphasizes the preservation and conservation of cultural heritage. “Pentas Seni Merdeka is not just an art performance event, but a platform to bridge the community’s relationship with our cultural heritage, strengthening Malaysia’s identity.”

This event has had a positive impact not only on culture but also on the creative economy of Kuala Lumpur. Dato’ Hamdan Abdul Majeed, Managing Director of Think City, stated, “The collaboration between Think City, DBKL, the Ministry of Finance, and strategic partners has brought significant positive impact, and we are confident that more success can be achieved together. Pentas Seni Merdeka, part of The KL Creative Festival, not only revives public space and historical heritage but also opens up more than 500 job opportunities in the creative industry.”

As part of the KL Creative Festival, this event has strengthened Kuala Lumpur’s position as a creative destination with over 100 events in the five main precincts of the city centre. This festival has a great impact on the creative industry and shows the potential of Kuala Lumpur to continue to grow as a center of culture and creativity in the region.

Visitors also have the opportunity to participate in interactive workshops and cultural activities, giving them an in-depth experience of the living and continuing traditions of Malaysia.
