COVID-19 vaccine adverse effects : Side Effect Treatment Provision Guaranteed by Gov’t – Dzulkefly

BALING: The government assures to provide follow-up treatment for recipients of COVID-19 vaccines including AstraZeneca who experience side effects as a result of the vaccine received.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Dzulkefly Ahmad said the government has data on adverse effects following immunization (AEFI) caused by COVID-19 vaccines and has methods to treat these side effects.

“AstraZeneca has recalled their vaccine and this is global, what we want to ensure is that if anyone has evidence related to the AstraZeneca vaccine, we do have ways to ensure they are provided assistance.

“We do have methods as a government to ensure they receive treatment. That’s the assurance given by the government. We will know about such cases and we also have a list, we have the data,” he said at a press conference here today.

Earlier, he attended the Handover Ceremony of Additional Building for Baling Hospital and Kepala Batas Health Clinic (Type 3) which was also attended by Director-General of Public Works Datuk Badioezaman Ab Khalik and Kedah State Housing, Local Government, and Health Exco Mejar (B) Mansor Zakaria.

Dr. Dzulkefly said the government will also be responsible for vaccine recipients from other pharmaceutical companies such as Pfizer-BioNTech and Sinovac if they are also found to experience side effects.

Previously, the global pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, based in Britain-Sweden, was reported to have recalled its COVID-19 vaccine worldwide.

As a follow-up, Dr. Dzulkefly was reported yesterday to have said that the Ministry of Health (MOH) will issue a statement regarding the issue in the near future.

Meanwhile, when asked whether the issue would raise concerns and confidence in the vaccine among the public, Dr. Dzulkefly said the issue related to the COVID-19 vaccine would not affect other vaccination programs including the National Immunization Program (NIP).

He said although there are some who are very sensitive to vaccine issues, the NIP, which has been practiced in the country for a long time, has successfully increased childhood immunization and prevented serious diseases.

“The COVID-19 vaccine is a different matter, we also have vaccination programs such as HPV to end cervical cancer, we also have the NIP where parents with children will feel assisted because these vaccines are expensive.

“There is no dispute in that matter, I believe the people know, have education, enlightenment, and knowledge, and we will continue to educate the people,” he said.
