Celebrating Local Heritage and Young Artists: Low Yat Group’s The RiverCity Unveils Stunning Wall Murals by Dasein Academy Students

KUALA LUMPUR, June 21, 2024 – The RiverCity proudly celebrated the unveiling of new wall murals created by talented students from the Dasein Academy of Art. As part of The RiverCity’s ongoing commitment to promoting local art and revitalizing community spaces, this initiative has transformed the walls throughout key blocks of the establishment into vibrant landmarks that celebrate Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage.

The mural project, held from June 12 to June 15, involved 34 students from Dasein Academy, guided by three lecturers. The students worked in groups to create murals themed around Malaysian food, landmarks, and culture. Their work not only improves the area’s visual appeal but also supports The RiverCity’s mission to rejuvenate and celebrate the historical significance of Sentul and Third Mile Jalan Ipoh – also known as Batu Tiga – which are key components of Kuala Lumpur’s cultural landscape.

Sentul: From Railway Hub to Cultural Beacon
Sentul, located in the northern part of Kuala Lumpur, is a historically significant area originally developed in the late 19th century as a railway hub. Home to the largest railway workshop in Malaysia, Sentul was central to the growth of the Malaysian railway system. Over the years, it has transformed into a diverse and vibrant urban community, known for its rich cultural mix and significant landmarks such as Sentul Park and the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPAC). The RiverCity is dedicated to contributing to Sentul’s modern development and placemaking, integrating contemporary urban initiatives with the area’s unique historical context.

Third Mile Jalan Ipoh (Batu Tiga): A Commercial and Cultural Landmark
Jalan Ipoh, particularly the Third Mile section known as Batu Tiga, is another area with deep historical roots. As one of the oldest roads in Kuala Lumpur, it played a crucial role in the city’s expansion. Batu Tiga is noted for its traditional shophouses and vibrant street life, reflecting the multicultural society of Kuala Lumpur. The RiverCity’s initiatives aim to rejuvenate this area, blending its rich history with contemporary urban development.

Through these efforts, The RiverCity, under the stewardship of the Low Yat Group, is revitalizing these historically rich areas, transforming them into thriving hubs of art and community, and contributing to the broader initiative of placemaking and cultural regeneration.

A Collaboration for Cultural Enrichment
The mural project is a significant collaboration aimed at infusing art into the local community and supporting young artists. The RiverCity, with its four distinctive hubs – the Pet Lovers Hub, Dine In & Delivery Hub, Merchants Hub, and Growers Market – serves as a dynamic environment that meets the needs of modern businesses and residents while fostering community connections. Additionally, The RiverCity is developing a community walking path adjacent to Jalan Selvadurai. While committed to cleaning up the riverine walkway adjacent to Sg Batu, The RiverCity will work with the authorities to enhance overall public infrastructure that benefits the community.

Ms. Chan Wai Yee, Senior Marketing Manager of The RiverCity, emphasized the project’s community impact: “Our mission at Low Yat Group has always been to enhance the quality of life for everyone in this community. This brings us to the heart of today’s celebration – placemaking. Placemaking capitalizes on a local community’s assets, inspiration, and potential, with the intention of creating public spaces that improve urban vitality and promote people’s health, happiness, and well-being. It’s about transforming areas into vibrant, functional, and engaging environments that foster a sense of community and belonging.”

Mr. Gooi Hean Chye, President of Dasein Academy of Art, expressed his pride in the students’ achievements: “This mural is more than just art. It’s a message to show that our students can contribute to society. I would like to extend my gratitude to our lecturers that also contributed highly to the success of this project.”
