Beware of Calls from Individuals Posing as MCMC Officers

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has cautioned the public to remain vigilant against calls from unknown individuals impersonating MCMC officers.

In a statement today, MCMC informed us that in the past week, there has been an increase in cases reported to them regarding this issue, with the modus operandi of the calls aimed at deceiving victims for specific purposes.

“The caller introduces themselves as an MCMC officer and informs the victim that their phone number has been involved in criminal activities, claiming that if the victim fails to comply with the instructions given, their line will be blocked or blacklisted,” according to the statement.

MCMC emphasized that any announcements or notifications regarding its affairs are carried out through official channels such as email, the MCMC website, or via social media platforms.

“MCMC does not use individual names, private mobile phone numbers, or questionable language.

“Authorities, including MCMC, will not request personal details and information from individuals,” according to MCMC.

The statement urged the public not to be deceived by such calls from unknown parties.

“People are advised to set restrictions on the caller’s phone number (block call or reject list) or obtain software or applications to block incoming calls or SMS to their phone lines,” it said.

MCMC informed us that if suspicious calls are received, the matter should be reported immediately to the police or the National Scam Response Center (NSRC) at 997, which operates from 8 am to 8 pm for further action.

“The public can also visit the Sebenarnya.my portal to verify unverified news,” according to the statement, adding that public vigilance is crucial in protecting oneself from falling victim to scams, personal information theft, and other forms of crime.
