Autoliv and Yamaha Develop Airbag Technology for Tricity 300 Commuter Scooter
STOCKHOLM — Global automotive safety leader Autoliv has partnered with Yamaha Motor Co. to develop an advanced airbag system for the Tricity 300 commuter scooter, marking a new milestone in efforts to enhance safety for motorcycle riders.
The innovation represents a significant development in two-wheel vehicle safety, as airbag technology that was previously limited to premium motorcycles is now being introduced to the commuter scooter segment used by everyday riders.
The collaboration also reflects Autoliv’s continued efforts to expand beyond its traditional automotive safety business while pursuing new opportunities in motorcycle safety solutions.
According to Autoliv, motorcycle accidents often occur under unpredictable conditions, highlighting the need for a more comprehensive safety approach to better protect riders.
The newly developed airbag system is designed to provide additional protection in the event of a frontal collision, one of the most common and severe types of motorcycle accidents.
Autoliv President and Chief Executive Officer Mikael Bratt said the partnership represents an important step in the company’s strategy to develop innovative safety technologies.
He noted that the initiative also supports the company’s long-term strategic agenda of improving protection for all road users.
Bratt emphasised that motorcyclists traditionally face significantly lower levels of protection compared with occupants of passenger vehicles, making the development of motorcycle airbag systems an important advancement in road safety.
The airbag module is seamlessly integrated into the front panel of the scooter and engineered to absorb the rider’s kinetic energy during a frontal collision.
At the same time, the system’s design ensures that the vehicle’s balance remains stable while preserving the scooter’s storage capacity.
To guarantee high performance and reliability, the airbag technology underwent rigorous validation processes.
These included advanced digital simulations and full-scale crash testing to evaluate the system’s effectiveness in different collision scenarios.
All testing procedures were conducted in accordance with industry safety development standards.
The updated Yamaha Tricity 300 equipped with the airbag module supplied by Autoliv is expected to enter the market in the first half of 2026, offering enhanced protection for urban scooter riders.
