High Court Clears Probate for Tycoon Ta Kin Yan’s Estate, Administration Begins Nearly Two Years After Death

KUALA LUMPUR — The estate of Malaysian business figure Tan Sri Ta Kin Yan has entered a new phase of legal administration after the High Court granted probate to his long-time Singaporean business associate Datuk Poh Po Lian.

The ruling, delivered nearly two years after Ta’s death in June 2024, formally authorises Poh to manage and distribute the late tycoon’s assets according to the instructions outlined in his will.

The approval marks a significant step forward in resolving legal matters related to the estate of the businessman, who built an extensive portfolio across several industries and countries.

Executor Named in 2008 Will

Court records indicate that Ta’s will, dated February 4, 2008, appointed Poh as the executor and trustee responsible for administering the estate.

As executor, Poh is entrusted with overseeing the management of Ta’s assets, ensuring that all financial obligations are settled and that the remaining estate is distributed among the beneficiaries named in the will.

Probate is a crucial legal document that validates a will and grants the executor the authority to manage a deceased individual’s estate.

In cases involving prominent business figures with diverse holdings, the probate process plays an essential role in ensuring that asset distribution proceeds according to legal and financial protocols.

Forensic Accounting Review to Ensure Transparency

To enhance transparency and clarity in the management of the estate, a forensic accounting review will be conducted.

The review is expected to examine the estate’s financial structure in detail, including asset valuations, ownership records and any associated liabilities.

Such assessments are commonly implemented in high-value estates to ensure that the administration process remains transparent and that beneficiaries receive their rightful shares.

The review will also help ensure that the distribution of assets aligns fully with the provisions outlined in the will.

Business Interests Across Multiple Regions

During his lifetime, Ta Kin Yan established himself as a prominent entrepreneur with business interests spanning several sectors including hospitality, property development, manufacturing and leisure industries.

He was the founder of Majestic Gen Sdn Bhd and maintained investments across various regions including Malaysia, China, Macau and Hong Kong.

Through his ventures, Ta built an extensive network of businesses that contributed to the growth of the hospitality and property sectors in multiple markets.

His entrepreneurial activities extended beyond national borders, making the administration of his estate particularly complex.

Origins of the Waz Lian Group

The Waz Lian Group, which Ta co-founded in 1987, initially focused on club management before expanding into hotel and resort operations as well as property development.

As the company grew, it became increasingly involved in projects tied to tourism and hospitality, sectors that experienced rapid expansion in the region.

This diversification helped establish the group as a recognised player in several business segments.

Legacy of a Regional Businessman

Ta Kin Yan passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 15, 2024 at the age of 72.

His death marked the end of a long and influential career in business, during which he developed ventures that spanned multiple industries and geographic markets.

He was laid to rest on June 21, 2024 at Nirvana Memorial Garden in Semenyih, Negeri Sembilan.

With probate now granted by the High Court, the administration of his estate can proceed formally, paving the way for the structured management and distribution of his extensive business legacy.
